History Background

The school of mathematics was established in July 2002 and changed to the school of mathematics and statistics in April 2008. After the development of more than 10 years, the school has made great achievements. The number of staff has increased from 7 to 71, and the number of undergraduate students has also increased from 61 to over 950. There are 58 full-time teachers, including 11 professors, 19 associate professors and 28 lecturers in which there are 9 doctoral supervisors and 34 master supervisors.

Departments

The school currently has three undergraduate majors, namely pure mathematics and applied mathematics, information and computational sciences, and statistics. It also recruits doctor candidates and master students in four majors, namely basic mathematics, operational research and cybernetics, probability theory and mathematical statistics, and statistics. The school is committed to training mathematics talents with a clear sense of competition, strong responsibility and a nice personality.

Outstanding Faculty and Students

The school has an excellent style of teaching and study. From 2013 to 2018, the school has finished 55 scientific research projects and published 164 papers by first or correspondence authors, of which 141 papers were retrieved by SCI/SSCI and 23 by CSSCI. Teachers have won 3 projects for school-level teaching reform and 1 project for the construction of excellent courses. At the same time, the school has organized and participated in national and international mathematical modeling competitions with excellent results, including 265 provincial and above awards and 53 national-based awards. And the students won 21 first prize and 86 second prize in the American Mathematical Modeling Contest. In recent years, the employment rate of students is among the highest. Most of the postgraduate students have been admitted by well-known domestic universities and research institutes such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and some outstanding graduates have been admitted by foreign prestigious universities such as Harvard University, Columbia University, Washington University, University of California, Berkeley, etc.

International Cooperation

In order to adapt to the new situation of higher education in the 21st century, broaden students' horizons and cultivate compound talents with a wide range of knowledge and innovative consciousness, the school and Taiwan Zhongyuan University jointly launched the "mathematics and finance " program in 2015. The students adopted the "2+1+1" training mode, i.e. they study in our school for the first two years, with the basic courses of mathematics and finance as the main courses. In the third year, they go to Taiwan Zhongyuan University to study, with finance as the main course. In the last year, the students return to Shandong University, Weihai.
